The Preparations for War

The Preparations for War The Arrival of Gandalf and Pippin Gandalf and Pippin arrive in Minas Tirith, warning Denethor of the coming attack. Denethor is distrustful but prepares for siege. The Mustering of the Outlands Forces from the southern fiefs arrive, but they are too few. The city's defenses are manned, but the mood is grim. The Darkness Falls The skies darken as the Shadow of Mordor spreads. The Nazgûl circle overhead, causing terror.

The Assault on the City

The Assault on the City The Breaking of the Rammas Sauron's forces breach the outer wall and pour into the Pelennor. Faramir is wounded, and the city's defenders fall back. The Gate Breached The Witch-king uses Grond, the great ram, to break the gates of the city. He enters, but is confronted by Gandalf. The Arrival of the Rohirrim The horns of Rohan are heard, and the siege is broken. The Witch-king leaves to face the Riders, leading to his death.

The Madness of Denethor

The Madness of Denethor Denethor's Despair Denethor, believing all is lost, decides to burn himself and Faramir alive. He is driven mad by his use of the Palantír and his grief for Boromir. The Intervention of Gandalf and Pippin Gandalf and Pippin intervene to save Faramir. Denethor sets himself on fire, but Gandalf rescues Faramir. The Death of Denethor Denethor dies in the flames, holding the Palantír. His death marks the end of the Stewards' rule.
